ABOUT

Satia Art and Floor - Custom Made Tibetan Carpets

As a child growing up in Germany and spending after-school helping out in his father's rug business, Bijan Koukpari had a natural interest in design. As he puts it, ''I think I just absorbed the business.'' That early involvement combined with an interest in architecture and development led to the founding of Satia Art + Floor in Vancouver. Founding a company that makes one-of-a-kind hand-knotted carpets from Nepal was a natural fit.

Satia Art & Floor was established in 1998 in Vancouver, Canada and is operated by Bijan Koukpari. Bijan has been in the handmade carpet business since 1976, first at his father’s Persian Carpet Import company in Germany and from 1981 to 1996 in his own Carpet Import company in Frankfurt, Germany.

These years of experience are being used to innovate new products and to provide the ultimate customer satisfaction. Since 1998, Satia Art & Floor has experimented in using Mohair and Cashmere in Tibetan Carpets. By now, these royal fibers are being used routinely to produce exclusive carpets of extraordinary quality.

Satia Art & Floor is using Cashmere, Mohair, Silk and selected grades of Sheep-wool to provide the right choice for each client. And with the installation of an effective inspection system at the manufacturing facilities of the carpets, any order is guaranteed to meet our exceptionally high standard.

The Satia Contemporary Carpet Collection provides a range of custom made-to-order carpets and rugs with true beauty and value. It is desirable to be able to purchase a really unique, handmade quality carpet, and have it custom made to optimize the suitability of the carpet to the living environment.

In the past decades there has been and still are many new materials introduced to the carpet industry. But the bottom line is that sheep’s wool remains still one of the best materials suitable for carpets. Many types of sheep wool are being used and one of the best performing sheep wools comes from the Tibetan Highlands. This sheep wool originates from sheep living in natural conditions around and above 12000ft altitude where their genes have been exposed to extreme weather conditions, such as temperature variations from -12C to 29C and UV index up to 12. Their Hair is relatively thin, long and soft.

Another reason for their great quality is that from cleaning, washing and spinning, this wool is being entirely and carefully hand processed. All superior natural properties, such as soil resistance, durability and luster remain intact for many years. Highest qualities of materials combined with an individual and unique creation of design, colour and size, gives the custom handmade Tibetan carpet an adequate fit and value for the space, which the user will appreciate overtime. (Often the users love their carpet more after some time has passed.) Because of the entire handmade process, accuracy for colors can be defined with 95% and for size a variation of about 1% for the width and 2 % for the length must be taken into account.

Other recommended materials are natural Silk produced from the Silkworm.

The natural Silk has been proven to be better than the alternatives, such as Banana Silk, artificial Silk etc. Within the natural Silk we offer 60 count and a softer and shinier 140 count.

Durability for residential use can be more than 100 years. The luster improves within 10 years. Soil residency has its limits, depending on the quality of the stain.
